Segesta, Erice and Trapani from Palermo: which day trip, and can you do it without a tour?

Updated October 13, 2026 · 5 min read

Doric temple of Segesta standing alone on a grassy hillside above a valley

For most visitors the Segesta, Erice and Salt Pans Full-Day Excursion from Palermo is the sensible choice: €70 per person for eight hours, 4.3 stars from 2,273 reviews, and it covers all three stops in a single day without you having to plan the connections. It is not the best-rated option, but it is by far the most-reviewed, and it is the cheapest of the well-reviewed full-day group tours.

What the three stops are

Western Sicily’s classic day out strings three places together. Segesta is an ancient site with an unfinished Doric temple on a hillside and a theatre higher up, a little over an hour from Palermo by road. Erice is a medieval hill town above Trapani, reached by road or cable car, with narrow stone streets and views down to the coast. The salt pans near Trapani are flat evaporation ponds along the sea, with windmills and a small salt museum.

They are far enough apart that a day trip from Palermo spends a large part of its eight hours in a vehicle. That is not a flaw so much as the shape of the day, and it is the main reason people choose a tour.

The standard excursion

At €70 it is the entry-level price for the full circuit among the well-reviewed tours, and it has more than ten times the feedback of any competitor except the €113.40 lunch tour. The 4.3 rating is solid rather than excellent, and it is below the 4.7 and 4.8 of the pricier alternatives. The listing does not give the group size, so check the booking page if that matters to you.

When to pay more

The €113.40 tour is the highest-rated, at 4.8 from 371 reviews, and it adds a Sicilian lunch and a wine tasting. The catch is that it is built around Erice and Marsala, not Segesta, so it is a different day, not an upgrade. Choose it if food and wine matter more than the temple.

The €79 ten-hour trip, rated 4.7, adds the seaside town of Castellammare del Golfo to Segesta and Erice; its 76 reviews make the score less certain than the figures for the bigger tours, and ten hours is a long day.

A word of caution on the cheapest option: one Segesta, Erice and Trapani salt pans day trip is listed at €55, but its rating is 2.7 from 18 reviews. A saving of €15 does not look worth that rating.

Without a tour

You can reach Trapani from Palermo by regional bus in under two hours, and Erice is a short cable car ride above the town, with its own fare. That works for one stop. The difficulty is combining all three: Segesta is a separate site outside any town, and doing the three by public transport means long waits and a day that ends early.

The self-guided Segesta van transfer at €85 is a middle route: it gets you to the site and back in 4.5 hours and leaves the visit to you. It is expensive for one site, and you should compare it with the €70 excursion, which includes Segesta and two more stops.

A rental car

This is one of the trips where a rental car makes the most sense, because the three places are spread out and the roads between them are straightforward. A car lets you start early, spend as long as you like at Segesta before the heat builds, and see the salt pans at the end of the day. If you want to do that, compare rental cars for Palermo and check the excess and deposit terms in the conditions before booking. Sicilian driving in towns is demanding; Erice’s narrow streets are best done on foot from a car park or by cable car.

Private tours

Several private trips exist, from €400 for a group of up to eight to €600 for up to two, but each has only a handful of reviews. They are worth a look only for a family or group that wants a fixed schedule.

Our recommendation for most visitors is the Segesta, Erice and Salt Pans Full-Day Excursion: it is the lowest price among the well-reviewed tours for the full circuit and has the most reviews, even though its 4.3 stars leave room for a pricier alternative if quality matters more than cost.
